Lights, camera, action! Those 3 words can be fun for some people, but for others, they cause anxiety when it comes to being in front of the camera for a headshot, branding photos, creating a dynamic video podcast, or a simple reel. To help you shine on camera and feel more confident, Kelly Johnson of Kelly Johnson Photography and enTICEing Media have put together some of their top tips for creating stellar content. Let’s dig in and transform your content game with ease and confidence.
Videography Tips
- Rehearse Your Scripts: Preparation is key to delivering your scripts confidently and naturally on camera. It’s better to spend time practicing what you will say to reduce the need for extensive editing and to maintain authenticity. Think of it as a casual conversation with a friend rather than a performance. If you need to, print a photo of a friend and put it above the lens, and talk to the photo so that you feel like you are having a conversation with a friend. This will help you relax and be more genuine.
- Review the Storyboard: Before the video session, go over the storyboard with your videographer. This will help you understand the flow and purpose of each scene allowing you to feel more in control and aligned with the vision of the video. It also helps you understand the purpose of certain shots, and how they will be used in the end, making the process smoother and more enjoyable.
- Wardrobe Winner: Choose multiple wardrobe options, but prioritize comfort. If you’re uncomfortable, the camera will pick up on it, and your audience will as well. It’s always best to choose something that makes you feel confident and at ease to project your best self.
- Reschedule if You’re Sick: Feeling under the weather? Reschedule your shoot. Your energy and voice need to be at their best to create a connection with your audience. Filming when you’re not feeling well can lead to a less impactful message.
- Embrace the Process: Relax and remember that mistakes and multiple takes are part of the creative process. It’s common to need several tries to get a line just right. However, don’t get caught up in the analysis paralysis. Mistakes humanize you and make you more relatable to the person watching. Stay calm, breathe, and go with the flow. Your ease will translate into a more compelling video.
Photography Tips
- Practice Your Smile: Your smile is your best accessory! Practice different levels of smiles, from slight grins to full-beaming smiles. This muscle memory will help you remember what feels most natural and flattering during your photo session.
- Choose the Right Photographer: Select a photographer that you feel comfortable with. Having a good rapport with your photographer can make a significant difference in the quality of your photos. At the very least, have a conversation beforehand to ensure you’re on the same page.
- Dress to Impress (Comfortably): Pick an outfit that makes you feel like a rockstar while being comfortable. Confidence is visible on camera, so wear something that makes you feel your best. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive to ensure you can move and pose freely.
- Be Kind To Yourself: We are often our own worst critics when it comes to photos. Remember the image is about connecting with your audience. They see the message and emotion you’re conveying more than any perceived imperfections.
- Use Props for Branding Photos: Props can add a personal touch to your branding photos and make them more engaging. Think about items that represent your business or personality and incorporate them into your photo session.
By incorporating these tips into any video or photo session, you will be well on your way to creating amazing videos and photos that resonate with your audience. Remember, the key is to be prepared, stay comfortable, and most importantly, have fun with the process. Your authenticity and enthusiasm will shine through, making your content truly stand out.
